the name s nylus :) im sixteen, malaysian and loving it.

life is like a rollercoaster, don t shoot me for the cheesiness. because, well, it is, isn't it? sometimes you get glittery confetti days, other times you just feel like one big pile of elephant poop. anyways, when life hands you lemons and all that. it s what friends, good movies and kitkat chunky s are for.

i think the world would be a better place if everybody could just learn to look at things diplomatically. i mean, instead of being hostile and defensive all the time, why don t we take a break and try to resolve issues over teh tarik and tosai instead?

pathos.

so i have to sit for an entrance exam to get into alice smith :( :( they re springing a bio and math o levels exam for me on tuesday. arghghgh the injustice of it all!! am SO not in the mood for poring over my textbooks again.

and what s worse, the head of economics wants to have a 'chat' with me. presumably to gauge how much i actually know about the subject. read: NIL. i know zilch about economics for goodness' sake. stock markets? bonds? what if he asks me about the marginalist economic theory or something like that?!?!

ergh. i am so dead.

in other news, i paid my first visit to the gardens and pavilion the other day in the hunt for the ever elusive Prom Dress (found it, bought it, own it!!! <3 <3 muahaha) both are pretty posh hotspots, i must say, especially the latter. pav is HUGE, migosh. walking from one end of the building to the other must be equivalent to an hours' worth of treadmilling at least.

was sorely tempted to buy a jco. donut, but the massive waiting line quelled my tastebuds. seriously. queues that long belong in disneyland. :/ if anyone happens to be swinging by, though, i want a boxful of the scrummy peanut butter ones :D buying one or two just doesn t cut it lah. especially after the long wait. twas mostly the working crowd lining up to get their sugary fix, and they all came away staggering under the weight of 3-4 boxes each. each!!

mum dug the christmas tree out of the storeroom yesterday. it s currently in the corner of the living room. very green, very plastic and very naked. evidently she expects me to start work on decorating it.

if you think this is some sort of aww-inducing cutesy tradition, you re sorely mistaken. i mean, yeah, it s fun in the beginning, but the novelty sorta wears off after you ve hung what feels like the hundredth silver bell/angel/pudgy miniature father christmas.

still. better me than su ann i suppose. the last time we left her to do it, the tree ended up looking like something out of a tim burton film.

something my little sis was tinkering on while i was slogging away during spm:

im not sure what s holding the duck/chicken/duchen up. but it s a pretty good effort overall i reckon :P the makings of another freddie linsky, perhaps?

p.s. eh i wanna go watch the golden compass! it looks like good stuff okay. nicole kidman And daniel craig. and talking bears! :D who wants to teman me!

come and talk to me

it s currently 3.30 a.m. sane folk would be sound asleep, but alas, that privilege is denied me. all my fault lah. who ask me clever clever go and watch donnie darko at 11 p.m.?? sheng burned it for me like waaay before spm, and i promised her i d watch it. i had the whole day, but nooo, i wait til it s all dark and gooosebumpy before popping it in the drive.

(incidentally, it s a damn good movie. thank you sheng!!)

any sort of review at this late hour is not going to do it justice, because im too sleepy/creeped out to think properly. donnie darko is a Brilliantly dark piece of psychoanalytic film. really. the concept blows the mind. i can t even put it into words, but go watch it. :P

only don t be stupid like me and watch it at night.

well yeah, spm is over and all that shiznit. the delirious euphoria is slowly but surely sifting into a somewhat more distilled emotion. haha. but im loving it all the same. there s nothing quite like a post-exam feeling, is there? it s like this immense weight has been lifted off my shoulders. goodbye mugging! goodbye feverish caffeine-shot nights! goodbye horrid plastic grey desks! it s over and done with. i am Liberated (until december ends anyway)

oh, this is a good feeling. :D

apart from exams, i was also struggling with another Big Obstacle throughout the month of november; basically, where to park my butt come 2008. sat for a scholarship test to abbey s two months ago along with vana, and we both got through that and the interview with the principal. :) basically, i had a choice to either stay here or go overseas to do my a levels.

after plenty of long talks with the parents, inner turmoil, and kit kats because i find they stimulate thought,

i decided to turn down the scholarship and stay put.

:) my reasons are my own. but im happy with my decision and 97.53% confident i ve made the right one.

crap, it s four. and i have to be up early tmr, because mum insisted on me joining this self defence workshop with wai peng and yee lian. what are they gonna do? teach us how to aim and spray?? hmm. it might prove useful i suppose, but honestly, i think i ll keel over if it involves any physical activity. my sleep deprivedness boggles the mind. i ve get to ease back into my normal sleeping pattern, which has been completely ripped apart by spm. i keep waking up at four and tossing around til five before dropping back to rem til about seven.

migosh, and now i ve officially done a full cycle. 24 hours of no sleep. i am going to die.

in other news, my dad is going for mcr with his colleague. yes, that yowling eyelinered goth boyband with more kohl than marilyn manson. my dad. the man who used to make me tuck my shirt into my pants when i was five.

the world continues to rotate on its axis. im off to read chick lit. night!

The New Crush.

now, anyone who knows me well knows that when it comes to celebrity crushes, i tend to go for slightly more ahm ... matured men (read: kevin costner, george clooney). none of them teeny bopper crushes, thanks very much. aaron carter can get his candy elsewhere as far as im concerned.

BUT today, after being glued to star world for one and a half hours watching akeelah and the bee (starring keke palmer and laurence fishburne. morpheus y' all!) ... i think i ve been converted.

meet sean michael afable. nineteen, eurasian and the current object of my desire. isn t he cute? :D a quick search on imdb (ah where would we be without that blessed database of all things hollywood?) revealed that he s half phillipino (no wonder he looks like utt! wait. is utt indonesian?), lives in the O.C, is an aspiring break dancer slash professional actor and has television credits which cover disney programmes like 'that s so raven' and 'phil of the future' (slight turn off, but i suppose it s forgivable. everyone has to start somewhere, after all).

<3 and get this, get this. he s into THE GOO GOO DOLLS! i swear it s destiny. too bad he s like a million miles away. :(

whoah. i haven t had a celeb crush in aeons. i feel thirteen all over again. :D

iron chef!

yeah, it s totally been that long. :P

greetings, to those of you still reading this! apologies for being MIA since forever. mea culpa mea culpa! due to a combination of streamyx screwupperance, trials and BBS (bloggers' block syndrome), nylus has not been in the house for a Very Long Time.

but now she is :D get the champagne out yo!

had what was quite possibly the most relaxing weekend EVAH since the start of the month! took the opportunity to catch up on sleep, of which i have been recently deprived. muahahah! nothing is quite as glorious as reclining in bed with a good book (atonement, by ian mcewan. excellent read! note to self: review in other post) and wilbur to cuddle.

wilbur, in case you re getting any funny ideas, is my pet pig plushie. totally.

went for bgc s iron chef yesterday with sheng. hahah omg it was so fun! :D it s this competition run by the youth fellowship @ bangsar gospel centre, see. as per the title, we were split into groups and had to come up with a set meal i.e. appetisers, main course and dessert. eastern was the theme, so our group (cephas) decided on prawn-mash-on-sugarcane (im pretty sure this isn t what it s called, but do your own research lah. apparently it s from thailand!), cheese-baked rice (again, this isn t really an eastern dish, but like cw said, 'rice is from the east right?' :P totally.) and milky honeydew sago for dessert.

as my culinary skills leave much to be desired, i didn t have much of a role to play. im more of a baking dudette lah! but i did help slice bell peppers for the toppings! all eight of them okay. with a knife that was so huge it resembled a parang. it s an achievement. even if i did take about 2 hours to finish chopping.

preparations were all at cw s apartment, so after we d finished 'helping out', we bummed in the living room playing ps2 and flipping through 'female'. unearthed skills i never knew i possessed while playing some chinese netherworld version of 'street fighter'. i totally pawned sheng! and for a first-timer, that s saying something :P

due to complications (the sink pipe swallowed one too many chicken bones and got plugged. the plunger, naturally, was nowhere to be found), we ran a wee bit late. piled into cw s van breathlessly at ten to six, armed with our dishes and things. waved goodbye to sheng (her brother was picking her up) and we were on our way!

or so we thought. halfway out of the apartment block, mun foong went, 'where s the ice cream?'

so we turned back and one of the guys ran up to retrieve the tub of vanilla ice sitting in cw s refridgerator sitting in cw s kitchen in cw s apartment. on the fourth floor.

when he got back, flushed, panting and clutching the yellow tub, mun foong went, 'where s the ice cream spoons?'

after screaming at her, we decided we could do without the blasted things and cw proceeded to put the pedal to the metal. careened past the ramadan crowd in bangsar, narrowing missing lamp posts and sign boards. we made it to church just as they were beginning to set up :P

couldn t stay for the judging session due to family matters (annual popiah rolling night with the aunties. don t ask) but according to pq, pillar won :( nooo! sniff. after all that hard work!

well. after all their hard work lah. :P ah well. twas fun nevertheless. quite a way to spend my saturday, all in all!

meh. it s lunchtime, and im really too ravenous to write anything more, so i ll just leave you guys with a few photos while i go grab something to munch:

a yellow bell pepper, pre-chop. doesn t it look so adorable?! it s like a miniature pumpkin!  felt so guilty for having to hack into it, i decided to take a picture of it first.

the camwhore in sheng surfaces. that s her posing with my bell pepper, taking a break from  tumbuking prawns for the prawn-mash-on-sugarcane. trick i learnt from cw s mum: if the prawns smell, just dump a whole lot of pepper on them. apparently it lessens the pong. tip for all you future taitais out there!

whaat? the other peppers needed some shutter love too.:P my legs look weirdly out of proportion, cos sheng was hanging on to her mortar and pestle while snapping. the silhouette behind me is emily, who s really nice and, like chiif, is a bit squeamish when it comes to all things dairy (she refused to help spread cheese slabs over the rice, retreating to the kitchen instead to help wash dishes. honestly!)

our pièce de résistance, sitting gently in sheng s portable oven. okay, so at this point it resembled something like baked brains. :P i swear, after the seven minutes were up, it looked delicious! and the smell that wafted out when we pinged open the oven door.. mmmm.

official judging session @ church, around 7 ish p.m. i wanted to snap the first team, but pq barged into the picture at the last second. cheh. haha i nearly died laughing at him all decked out in waiter gear. :p

kerfuffle.

everyone this side of malaysia with access to the star/google/a kopitiam ought to know this by now, but cheryl s asked me to blog about it anyway, so i will.

nathaniel tan, PKR information bureau staff, resident blogger @ jelas.info. and cheryl s big brother, was arrested at his office yesterday at 5 p.m. by three plainclothes police officers under the cybercrimes unit of OSA. he was tried today at the remand majistrate court. apparently he s been remanded for four days or something. im a little fuzzy on the whole situation, but for full details, go to her blog.

i certainly don t profess to know much about our country s politics, but even to the politically ignorant (such as i), it s plain to see that barging into someone s private office and arresting him without being able to provide a valid reason to justify said arrest is nothing short of abduction. hello, it s called an infringement of basic human rights. in the first place, you can t just swoop into someone s office and drag him off to lock-up without some sort of explanation, or at the very least producing some sort of authoritative identification (they just said they were part of the 'Special Branch' and requested him to follow them). wah. so any tom, dick or harry sporting a tootbrush misai and police-y swagger can waltz into my house and arrest me now issit? eh, quite scary lah.

and secondly, what happened to freedom of speech and all that? jabatan pendidikan ought to seriously consider revising our moral syllabus, cos values like 'kebebasan bersuara' and 'kesederhanaan' obviously count for squat in our country.

please pray for nathaniel and his family. pray that he doesn t get mistreated wherever they re keeping him.

friday the 13th. hmmm.

exodus.

blogging s been on the backburner for some time. sorry folks! there s been so much going on lately i can barely find the time to (searching for suitable hyperbole here) pee (okay maybe not), let alone plonk my fanny down and churn out a proper post.

s matter of fact, im due to run off in about ten minutes. but here s group of bullet points about my week. read and decipher as you will!

  • walkman W800i - divine. utterly, completely divine. as cheryl and e wah will undoubtedly concurr. *eyes glaze over* it is the Great Phone! it is the Phone of the World! i would so bump off three trackers for it :P
  • cheryl s farewell- hitched a ride from a not-so-stranger (okay lah. you don t drive that horribly :P) from 1u with ks. twas nice seeing all the ex-form fives again! rowan and khu, the malaysian david copperfields, made me sit through a million and one card tricks which (as they proudly informed me) they d developed and honed during lectures in college. either they re really good, or im really naive.
  • durians durians durians. we don t even have to buy them; they just keep falling (metaphorically) into our welcoming laps :D on wednesday uncle daniel sent like 5 over from his farm in segamat. and mx s mum just came over with 3 more beauties all the way from pahang. ohh the creamy goodness <3 <3 i swear i will never understand people who dislike durians. or the way they smell. call yourselves malaysians! how can you not lurve that pungent pong?!
  • HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX WHICH HAS BEEN IN THE CINEMAS FOR APPROXIMATELY 48 HOURS WHICH I HAVE YET TO SEE SO WILL SOMEONE PLEASE HURRY UP AND BOOK TICKETS ALREADY KTNXBAI
  • HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS WHICH IS DUE FOR RELEASE IN A WEEK AND A DAY WHICH I AM POSITIVELY DYING TO LAY MY HANDS ON SO WILL SOMEONE KINDLY ARRANGE TO SEND ME TO TIMES BSC AT 6 A.M. ON THE 21ST OF JULY KTHXBAI
  • bumping into puan siti and joyce at bangsar on the way back from accounts. hahaa it was hilarious! she saw me (plus sheng and mx :P), balked, swerved and dived neatly into a nearby clotheshop. obviously hoping to avoid the inevitable. too bad joyce lacked her instant reflexes. :P 'puan ccccttttt! cikgu sedang buat apaaaa?'
  • su ann s report card, which reads like the Holy Book. mum s been waving it smugly in my face ever since she skipped home with it on thursday. it is extremely annoying. 'su ann participates actively and intelligently in class'. 'su ann shows an enthusiasm fr mathematical activities, and uses a variety of approaches to mathematical tasks involving larger numbers (e.g. cubes or hundred square). she is becoming a keen mathematician and competes with her peers to achieve success.' 'su ann displays a good general scientific knowledge and can offer suggestions and share ideas with the rest of the class during discussion.' 'su ann can locate and name the continents and oceans on a world map accurately'. bah. she even got praised by her p.e. teachers!!  'su ann is always well-prepared and takes an active role in Physical Education classes. she shows a natural ability in jumping events. well done.'

 -______-

i mean, honestly.

Sunk.

flahhh. feel like self has been gently mowed over by ten ton truck. seriously man. i can practically feel my inner chi seeping out through my fingertips. :( arghghgh. so tireddd. only reason im awake now is cos i just consumed 1/8 of that ginormous cadbury bar pa brought back from australia. thank goodness for chocolatey pick-me-ups.

yesterday (or was it day before yesterday? garh. even my sense of time s warped.), we had like a double physics period. so mr pancha turned on the c.r.o. (which stands for cathode ray oscilloscope. i knew this! so proud of self) to demonstrate the difference between direct and alternating currents. i swear it was the funnest i ve ever had during his lessons. :D the little green dot on the black screen (cos of electrons and flourescence yada yada) was so star wars opening scene-esque! so much so that self started humming opening theme. under my breath of course. haha. shaddap don t laugh okay.

and then he moved on to the next subtopic, which was on transformers. :D heehee. so naturally i spent the better part of the lesson wondering what he d say if i stood up, kicked my stool aside and yelled, 'c.r.o., transform!'

...

okay my cortisol level s totally off the chart. i need more cadbury premium pronto. off to raid fridge now. :P later gater!

it s kinda cute.

behold; the picture spam post!

because this blog has been devoid of pixel glory for way too long. and also cos my creative juices are zilch, due to having spent 2 hours cooped up in room solving brain-splitting functions. flahh. mr kweh so owes me high-fibre cheesecake now.

arranged in no particular order:

taken at a corner of cava, where ainessa had her sweet 16. sidekeek, chudders, yen wei and lamboo. :) good food, good company and fab dessert made for a very fun night indeedy.

goofballs wen jun and sean

in all their glowstick-ed glory!

koh samui, dahling? not quite. but i reckon it comes close enough :) the jetty @ pulau perhentian, where we stopped to take one last pic before speedboating over to kota bharu. also where i accidentally dropped the left side of my bata slippers while dangling my feet over the ledge. thank God for the nice lady who retrieved it before it floated out to sea. if she hadn t been snorkelling around the area, i d probably have been forced to limp all the way back to the lcct terminal. :P

me squishing balloons in yen wei s backyard. yes you read that right. :D this was about a year ago, on hui juin s birthday. we crashed her place to make a mural!

mwahahah! i did it! i did it! diee, sacs of cheap store-bought poster paint, dieee!

boneys minus one. stoopid mx was trying to impale me with her paintbrush. that s me fending her off, hence the rather forced grin. that daft cow. she was going straight for my jugular!

the end product. :)

aaaah. now tell me that isn t postcard-worthy. *sips pina colada*

when we aren t clawing each other s eyes out.

1/9 of the beruang marchers, whom i adored (except when they whined) and still adore. you guys made me and the rest of the captains so proud :) viva la hollywood!

po leen s birthday bash at shangri-la! erm. minus po leen, who had to answer the call of nature. :P we were trailing along behind her, but got kinda sidetracked at the sight of the huge gilded mirrors. haha we are such cam hos! yes that means you too jc :P

okay okay more pics later. i need to go do something intelligent and productive now.

p.s. yesterday while we were out for dinner, pa drove past this giant harry potter billboard ad. ron s back to his old hair! looks less like a shetland sheepdog now. but that s not the point.

the point is the point is!!

11 DAYS AWAY :D *skips*

this almost makes up for the omnipresent trials. almost.
